More Brazilians with Internet Access!

First of all, remember this: Here, only one thing matters: growing your business through the internet!

The data refers to 2019 and represents a growth of 3,6 percentage points compared to 2018.

The Brazilian population is increasingly connected. This is shown by the 2019 National Household Sample Survey (PNAD), conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). According to the survey, 82,7% of national households have internet access, an increase of 3,6 percentage points compared to 2018.

The growth in household internet connectivity was most significant in rural areas. The percentage of connected households jumped from 49,2% in 2018 to 55,6% in 2019, representing a 6,4 percentage point increase. In urban households, internet usage rose from 83,8% in 2018 to 86,7% in 2019.

The increase also occurred in all major regions of the country. In the Northeast, for example, there was a 5,2 percentage point increase in households connected to the internet, rising from 69,1% in 2018 to 74,3% in 2019.

The IBGE survey also shows that 12,6 million households still did not have internet access. The reasons given were lack of interest (32,9%), expensive access service (26,2%), and the fact that no resident knew how to use the internet (25,7%).

Connection Types

Another important point of the survey is the data on connection types. Mobile broadband increased from 80,2% in households in 2018 to 81,2% in 2019. Fixed broadband increased from 75,9% to 77,9%. The proportion of households with both types of connection jumped to 59,2% in 2019. The percentage was 56,3% in 2018.

IBGE also highlights that the cell phone continues to be the main tool used by those connected to the internet. It was found in 99,5% of households with access to the World Wide Web. Next comes the computer, with 45,1%, followed by television (31,7%) and tablet (12%).

In 2019, among the 183,3 million people aged 10 or older in the country, 143,5 million (78,3%) used the internet in the last three months. Young adults aged 20 to 29 were the most frequent users. Usage is higher among students (88,1%) than among non-students (75,8%). Students in private schools (98,4%) use the internet more than those in public schools (83,7%).

Internet access via TV increased from 23,3% to 31,7% in households, and usage for watching videos, movies, and series grew from 86,1% to 88,4%.

The Ministry of Communications develops important programs to end the country's digital desert, which affects more than 45 million Brazilians. Initiatives such as Wi-Fi Brasil, Norte Conectado, Nordeste Conectado, and Cidades Digitais contribute to the evolution of connectivity throughout the country.

With the 5G auction, expected to take place in 2021, the mission of bringing connectivity to all Brazilians will become even stronger. The Ministry of Communications' tender stipulates that by the end of 2022, all Brazilian state capitals should have 5G operational.
